Don Tapscott's Interpretation of Blockchain: Global Currency, Regulation, and Innovation Opportunities
Exclusive Interview with Digital Economy Experts: Blockchain Offers Us New Opportunities
During the Blockchain Conference in San Francisco, we had the privilege of interviewing Don Tapscott, a renowned expert in the digital economy. As one of the authors of "Blockchain Revolution," Don has been at the forefront of blockchain research. His research institute covers 14 directions of "Blockchain+", including energy-related projects, and collaborates with multiple enterprises.
Don believes that stablecoins are likely to facilitate the emergence of a global currency. Data shows that the usage ratio of USDT in the payment sector has reached 30%, with a 20% increase in its usage on both the C-end and B-end. Regarding whether China's DCEP can become a global currency, Don takes a cautious stance and is more inclined to support the global cryptocurrency concept proposed by the Governor of the Bank of England.
On regulatory issues, Don has shown an objective stance. He criticized the government's strict regulation of token Blockchain while also opposing the extreme view that "central banks should not get involved in Blockchain." When discussing the development of Blockchain in Canada, Don admitted that the current regulatory environment is still hindering industry growth, a problem similar to that in the United States.
Looking to the future, Don is neither pessimistic nor optimistic. He believes that while Blockchain cannot solve all problems, it provides new opportunities for improving the current situation. Compared to the optimism of many practitioners, Don is more inclined towards a rationally optimistic attitude, affirming the industry's prospects while also respecting the power of existing systems.
The following are selected highlights from the interview:
Don highly praised the Chinese government's emphasis on blockchain, believing that this approach is worth imitating by other countries. He pointed out that blockchain is a key technology for building an innovative economy.
Regarding global currency, Don believes that China's DCEP should not pursue this goal, but rather a global cryptocurrency supported by central banks of various countries. He emphasizes that central banks need tools to enhance the transparency of economic operations to respond to potential crises.
When discussing the differences in attitudes towards Blockchain between the United States and China, Don calls for an open mind. He believes that the government should allow and encourage the development of various cryptocurrencies and Blockchain technologies, as currency is just one of the many applications of Blockchain. Hindering the development of token Blockchain will suppress overall economic growth.
Don criticized the United States for its punitive actions against Blockchain companies, believing that regulators need to find a balance between protecting investors and promoting innovation. He called for multiple stakeholders to collaborate in formulating new strategies that adapt to the digital age.
Regarding the situation in Canada, Don stated that, similar to the United States, the regulatory environment remains a major obstacle to the industry's development. He revealed that his research institute is collaborating with several institutions, including those in China.
Don's research center focuses on how Blockchain is changing businesses and governments, covering 14 industries including supply chain, finance, manufacturing, media, energy, and more. He believes that Blockchain provides new opportunities to solve the problems brought by the information internet, but emphasizes the need for continuous effort to realize this potential.
